A Gallup Europe survey found that EU leaders stress energy
human rights and intellectual copyrights related issues as the major challenges the EU and China will have to face
James Clifton
CEO of the Gallup Organization
and Robert Manchin
Chairman of Gallup Europe participated on October 12 at Friends of Europe's third annual VIP roundtable to discuss 'The State of Europe' and the EU-China-US policy triangle. During the 'Atlantic Rendez-Vous'
where the Gallup Europe transatlantic EU leaders' survey had been released on this occasion
the focus was on how to define the EU-China -US policy triangle. It gave an opportunity for a lively debate at a critical time after the EU-China summit in September and just before the release of the much-anticipated European Commission strategy document in November.

A strong majority of US and EU leaders are pessimistic about the long term outlook for energy security
a Gallup Europe poll says
A critical question for leaders on both sides of the Atlantic is the future of energy policy in light of the challenges of climate change and of energy security and competition for scarce resources. Gallup Europe and Friends of Europe conducted this poll among 187 high-level respondents comprising government officials
heads of major companies
academics
lobbyists and NGOs
between October 16-27
2006. The results of the survey were presented at the European Policy Summit organised by the Friends of Europe on Energy Security of Supply

To enhance the understanding of the (lack of) entrepreneurial spirit among the youth
Gallup Europe is preparing the launch of the Young Entrepreneurs' Survey
Entrepreneurs are the backbone of EU and US economies and the basis for innovation
economic growth
and welfare creation. However
according to the Flash Eurobarometer on Entrepreneurship conducted in 2004
almost 60% of EU15 citizens have never considered setting up a business. Unlike its US counterpart
EU education system does not produce enough entrepreneurs and SMEs still widely suffer from too many obstacles. Furthermore
although they represent the future
there is a clear lack of reliable data on young entrepreneurs' related issues. Therefore understanding the state of play for young entrepreneurs in the EU and the US and learning from the US and Member States models' best practices are vital for the EU
hence the need for reliable and trusted data. No progress can be achieved without understanding the young entrepreneurs' concerns and motives
factors of development regarding the entrepreneurial mindsets at individual and collective
levels
likewise communicating issues based on comparable data from Member States and the US.

Analysis
Baltic Youth Yearn for Greener Pastures
An alarming number of young Lithuanians
Latvians
and Estonians would like to move west
The New Gallup World Poll data reveal that many people in the Baltic States
especially the younger generation
are pessimistic about the job markets in their countries. Despite the region's impressive growth rates and low unemployment compared to other European countries
given the chance
they would like to emigrate. As many as two in every three Lithuanians aged 15 to 24 say that if they could afford it
they would move permanently to another country.
