STONE, Philip

Curriculum

Philip Stone is a social psychologist with a continuing interest in letting people be heard, making voice effective, and facilitating collaborative work that dates back to his University of Chicago undergraduate courses with Carl Rogers, who advocated respecting how clients frame their situations in "client-centered" therapy. His graduate work was with R.F. Bales in group dynamics and G.W. Allport. Research interests have ranged from psycho-physiological changes during negotiations to time-budget surveys to working with the Steelcase Company to design office environments that facilitate collaboration. A current interest is in combining Internet-archived publications and other texts with in-depth survey responses to evaluate the social capital of organizations and communities. He teaches at Harvard and is a Senior Scientist with the Gallup Organization.

Measuring the Emotional Economy in Europe

Developing Barometers of Sentiments expressed in the Public-Domain

Phillip Stone proposed a "sentiment barometer" of publicly expressed emotions in the enlarged European Union. He argued that using readily available software that use either inductive or deductive artificial intelligence we could be able to capture and track the strength of public sentiments in the media that are accessible in electronic text format via the internet. He used the examples of US presidential candidates' preliminary speeches and editorials of university newspapers to illustrate the measurable differences of positivity and negativity that characterise papers or candidates, One of his interesting proposals was that with he application of such a barometer vanguard regions can be determined in Europe, that set the trends for the rest of Europe.
