Born in 1944, Stockholm, Sweden.

University degree in statistics, mathematics, and economy.

Employed by Statistics Sweden in 1968.

Doctoral degree in statistics in 1981 from Stockholm University. Ph.D. thesis: "Control of the Coding Operation in Statistical Investigations-Some Contributions."

Head of Statistical Research Unit at Statistics Sweden in 1982-1988. Head of Secretariat for International Research in 1988-1992. Head of Research and Development Department 1992-2000. Senior methodologist, Director General's Office 2000-present. Appointed Quality Co-ordinator in 1993-1999. Founder and Chief Editor of the Journal of Official Statistics 1985-present.

President of the International Association for Survey Statisticians 1993-1995. Chair of the Survey Methods Research Section, American Statistical Association 2002.

Co-author and co-editor of the following books:
- Data Quality Assurance. Liber 1976
- Telephone Survey Methodology. Wiley 1988.
- Measurement Errors in Surveys. Wiley 1991.
- Survey Measurement and Process Quality. Wiley (1997).
- Introduction to Quality in Surveys. Wiley (forthcoming).

Author and co-author of numerous papers on topics including: coding errors, census adjustment, telephone surveys, non-response, quality control, total quality management, sampling and automated coding.
