Measuring the Emotional Economy in Europe

Nonresponse: Mere cost inflator or moral threat?

Bob Groves covered an ever-increasing dilemma -- or in his words a potential "mortal threat" of survey research, that is the non-response bias. He analysed several surveys from this aspect and he found contradictory evidence for any adverse effects of small response rates. In many cases an increased response rate would not significantly move the estimated distributions, while in some other cases there is a measurable effect that we can call non-response bias. It needs careful evaluation if and to what extent should we invest in maximising response rates if its effects are minimal.
