On the second day, Bob Tortora, Gallup’s Regional Research Director for Sub-Saharan Africa will join a debate on the subject “Getting Africa’s infrastructure right”. April 8, 2009: Panel debate ahead of the European Parliamentary elections (April 28, 2009 – Brussels).

In June, 500 million EU citizens will decide on the composition of the EU’s only directly-elected body; the one that has their highest degree of trust. With Europe, if not the world, in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the 1930s, the new European Parliament will face a raft of major challenges. Given this background, Gallup, the Bertelsmann Stiftung and IFRI are jointly organising a panel debate on the European Parliament’s future agenda and what EU citizens can expect from both the new assembly and the EU itself. The event – April 28th - will be broadcast by Euronews, the event’s media partner. At the event, Gallup Europe CEO Robert Manchin will present key findings on the topic from various Gallup polls, to be followed by a panel debate with Sylive Goulard, current President of the French European Movement and MoDem candidate for the European Parliament, Professor Joachim Starbatty of Tübingen University, Italian MEP Monica Frassoni (Greens) and British MEP Richard Corbett (Labour Party).

April 2, 2009: The general assembly of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR).

This will take place in Malmö, 22-24 April 2009, with Gallup’s participation. The focus will be on how the economic and financial crisis affects local and regional governments. On the first day of the assembly, Robert Manchin will take part in a round table debate on “Thriving or Surviving” (in the current crisis). The CEMR has asked its members to say how the current crisis affects their own national members: i.e. the towns, cities and regions of Europe, and it is apparent that many local and regional authorities are faced with major problems: SMEs closing down, rising unemployment rates and budgetary difficulties. Manchin will illustrate his contribution to the debate with reference to data from Gallup’s Soul of the City programme (click here for details).

On the second day of the assembly, there will be a session entitled “Europe and the Territorial Dimension (The EU and its neighbours: co-operation for peace, stability and integration).” During this session, the CEMR and NALAS (a network of associations of South Eastern Europe) will present a paper on the satisfaction and expectations of urban dwellers in the Balkans. This paper will contain relevant data that has been extracted from the Gallup Balkan Monitor. During the plenary sessions, Robert Manchin will present an overview of job conditions and employment issues based on Eurobarometer and Gallup World Poll data. His presentation will include data on:

  • An assessment of wellbeing in Europe, US and the BRICs as perceived by the citizens and the future outlook for personal socio-economic conditions
  • The situation regarding work conditions, business conditions and entrepreneurship in those countries with a special emphasis on the EU
  • The level of employee engagement in the EU vs. the US vs. the BRICs
  • A look at the social realities in 20 years time for EU citizens.
