Cypriots see a benefit from the accession into the EU

74% of Greek Cypriots believe that Cyprus will benefit from its accession into the European Union, according to the result of an opinion poll carried out on behalf of the European Union by the company Gallup.

According to the polling company, both in Cyprus as well as in the other countries of the EU where opinion polls are carried out, a rising trend is observed of the percentages that support the development of the cooperation among the member states in a number of areas.

As Gallup reports, Greek Cypriots judge that the greatest benefits of Cyprus' accession into the EU will appear primarily in the areas of the economy and the security, and secondarily in the labor market and the protection of the environment. 50% of the respondents in Cyprus consider that on a number of areas, such as the settlement and employment of people from outside the EU, the educational system, and taxation matters, decisions should be taken jointly at EU level. In the previous opinion poll this percentage was 40%.

Sixty percent of the respondents support the cooperation at EU level on matters of foreign affairs, defense and social security, where, as it is referred, a raising trend is also observed.

On matters of environment and the fight against drugs, 8 out of 10 Cypriots respond that these should be faced on an E.U. level with common decisions, while 9 out of 10 respondents believe that the same should happen in the areas of research and technology.
