Government may have a negative influence on referendum

Negative opinions about Leszek Miller's government may discourage Polish citizens to vote in referendum. This is the opinion of three-fourth of Poles - according to the results from the latest Eurobarometer of "Rzeczpospolita".

69% think that the worst perceptions of the government in The Third Republic of Poland will influence the way we will vote in the referendum.

There is only slightly over a month left to the referendum, meanwhile - according to CBOS and OBOP - only every tenth surveyed person has positive opinions about quality of ministers' work.
Poles' opinions of politicians will influence the turnout in the referendum - these are anticipations of 75% of surveyed people. Those who feel sure about it are mainly young people, with high school degree, living in medium towns.

Prof. Lena Kolarska-Bobinska - Director of Institute of Public Affairs - admits that negative perceptions of the government may have a negative influence on the turnout in the referendum. If the integration is perceived as "elites' project", the way to express one's opposition will be disregarding the referendum.

Currently, 56% of voting population are determined to take part in the referendum. 23% of polled people still hesitate ("rather yes"). At least half of the voting population has to vote in the referendum to make it valid.

Will Poles' opinion of the government influence the results of the accession referendum? Our researches show that most of the respondents think so - 69%. This opinion is shared mostly by those, who in 2001 supported parties, which disapproved the integration: supporters of LPR - League of Polish Families (87%), Self-Defence (73%) and also PSL - Polish Peasant Party (74%), which is the party of diversified opinions of EU.

Conclusions based on such questions often reflect general opinions of media - calms down prof. Lena Kolarska-Bobinska. In her opinion, if negative perception of the government really indicated the negative attitude towards the integration, now masses of Poles would reject EU.

How does the support for EU look like? Rzeczpospolita was the first to ask Poles exactly the same question, as it will be in the referendum on 7th and 8th of June. Option "Yes" was chosen by 81% of those who want to vote. This means an increase by 8 points in comparison with the beginning of March, when we carried out the previous Eurobarometer.
