Analysis

Public opinion: Still lack of information

Eight from ten Czech citizens perform now the interest in the European goings-on. However, one half of them is still missing - according to their own words - arguments, why should they say "yes". The latest estimates - despite that - are a good reason for optimism. Seventy percent of Czech citizens will probably participate in referendum and nearly eighty perent of them will vote for accession of the Czechia to EU. "We must be very careful in our estimates. This is the first referendum in the Czech history, therefore we don't know, how much is possible to use regular election criteria for the estimates," said at the press conference the director of TNS-Factum, Jan Herzmann, about the results of survey.

The concern about what a Czech membership will bring on to the country is increasing before the Czech "D" day. 27 percent of respondents are afraid of higher prices. Thirteen percent is fear of the Czech agriculture destiny. "It has a symbolic value for people. The impacts will affect not only farmers but also prices of food. Therefore is necessary to be more focused both on farmers and price of food," hinted Jan Hartl, the director of STEM. The farmers always claim they still don't know why to support the accession.

The key group are young people between 18 and 29 years old; though are for membership but they are not very interested in voting. "We prepared together with Internet servers like Atlas, Seznam and Centrum an action: on special banners the links to www.Euroskop.cz will appear, where young people can find information on voting process, even on how to vote away from place of residence," the director of Communication strategy department of the Ministry for Forreign Affairs Jana Adamcová explains. She is responsible for pre-referendum campaign.
It is necessary to convince the pensioners about the advantage of accession within social sphere. More than one half of inhabitants think that living standard will decrease, because social security in EU member states is on the higher level than in the Czech Republic. They say lack of information is to blame for that.
